5 Steps to Reset Your Mind, Body and Health

Life can be difficult. You may have a stressful job, a demanding boss, young children to care for, a problematic relationship – whatever it is, life takes its toll on our mind, body and health. Ideally, we’d take a vacation to a tropical island once a month to kick back and hit the reset button, preparing our mind and body to deal with all the stress and anxieties of daily life.

But that’s not realistic.

So how can we hit the reset button? Here are 5 steps to get you started:

1. Start meditating

Routed in ayurvedic teachings and Eastern medicine, meditation is one of the oldest health practices you can find and has hundreds of amazing and often surprising benefits. These include: improving memory by way of increasing cortical thickness in the brain, preventing or slowing down neurodegenerative diseases, reducing blood pressure, increasing neuroplasticity in the brain, decreasing pain responses, reducing stress and improving attention span.

If you want to reset your mind, you need to start meditating. It will enable you to manage the daily stresses of life a lot more easily, you will start to feel more grounded and in control.

2. Start Journaling

Journaling is a great way to make sense of what is going on in your mind. Maybe you’re trying to make a big life decision or you’re going through family issues, journaling will help you understand the connection between your thoughts. Studies have shown that daily journaling decreases stress, improves memory, boosts mood and strengthens emotional functions.

So if you want to start a new slate, grab yourself a journal and start everyday with writing about your goals, your dreams and your challenges and see how your day changes.

3. Do more high intensity interval training (HIIT)

When you exercise endorphins are released, which produce positive feelings, reduce the perception of pain and increase energy levels 3 . Exercise also lowers blood pressure, decreases blood fat levels, combats inflammation and increases bone density and delays atrophy (muscle decline and weakening). What is not to love?

HIIT style workouts burn more calories, trigger superior metabolic chain reactions compared to longer, cardio style workouts and are more time efficient, taking typically only 10 minutes. Perhaps the most effective form of exercise you can do, HIIT will reset your mind, your body and your health.

4. Start being aware of what you put in your body

Calories are not just calories. They are comprised of macronutrients, micronutrients and chemical compounds, that trigger chain reactions in the body. Every 4pm when you get the energy lull, you probably reach for the coffee and something sweet. Even though this may help you get through the day, it causes a spike of insulin and cortisol (the stress hormone) which causes your energy and adrenaline to spike up and then ultimately crash.

Start viewing food as fuel, start nourishing your body with healthy, nutrient dense, unprocessed foods. Stop going for the low calorie option over the nutrient dense option, start being aware of what is actually in the food you are eating to help your body work the most efficiently it can.

5. Give your mind and body the right tools to help you reset your health
